Cyclocross FAQ (courtesy www.seattlecyclocross.com)
What is cyclocross? Cyclocross is one of the fringe areas of the cycling world, but is steadily growing throughout the nation. It is sort of like an off-road criterium, with a whole lot of things to make you hurt thrown in. Barricades which make you dismount and leap over with your bicycle in tow are placed periodically on the course, as well as the requisite "run-up," where the going gets so tough you have to run up the hill with your bike over your shoulder.
What is a typical race like? We have a plethora of categories, so that anyone wanting to race cyclocross will find some group to fit on in with. From a short race for kids from 2 to 11 years old, to one for raw beginners (with a less technical course), and even a single-speed category for the clinically insane. Races last about 30 to 45 minutes at the beginning of the year (depending on category), and we gradually increase the length over the season.
What about the bike? If you've walked into any reasonably sized bike shop recently, you've probably seen a cyclocross bike. They look like road bikes, except with cantilever brakes and a whole mess o' clearance for knobby tires. However, if you don't feel you need yet another bike in the garage, we aren't picky. Mountain bikes are now allowed in all catergories.
How about some history? The Seattle Cyclocross Series has been running for years, in that time hosting two national championships at our famous North Seatac course, and all the while producing some of the top racers in the country.
